  • Historically, status epilepticus was defined as a seizure lasting >30 minutes. In 2015, the ILAE updated the definition of status epilepticus to a seizure lasting ≥5 minutes.7
  • Approximately 70% of children diagnosed with epilepsy before the age of 1 year will experience status epilepticus.10,14
  • Convulsant status epilepticus is the most common form of status epilepticus.
  • The workup of patients presenting with status epilepticus varies with the age of the patient, type of seizure, past medical history, concern for nonaccidental trauma or medical neglect, and the presence or absence of fever.
