  • Diverticulosis refers to the presence of diverticula, which are small, bulging pouches on the colon wall. Diverticulitis is the inflammation or infection of 1 or more diverticula.
  • Many factors contribute to the formation of diverticula: aging, low fiber, consumption of processed foods, and genetic predisposition.
  • Patients with symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease (SUDD) present with symptoms similar to irritable bowel syndrome: abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits; however, these patients do not exhibit overt inflammation or complications as seen in diverticulitis.
