  • Constipation can be defined as reduced bowel movement frequency and/or abnormally firm stool consistency.
  • The Bristol Stool Form Scale scoring system for stool appearance is commonly used in clinical practice and research. (See Figure 1.)
  • "Normal" bowel movement frequency has been defined as between 3 bowel movements per day to 3 per week.10
  • Consistency of stool is a better marker for speed of colonic transit than frequency of bowel movements.11
