Points & Pearls Excerpt

  • Following initial infection with HIV, many patients experience acute illness with typical viral syndromes, which may lead them to seek urgent care treatment.
  • The United States Preventative Service Task Force and CDC recommend HIV screening in all individuals aged 13 to 65 years, all pregnant persons, and any person who is at risk of exposure to HIV.
  • Patients with concern for HIV exposure via sexual contact or injection drug use should be screened for co-infections such as tuberculosis, hepatitis viruses (A, B, C), and sexually transmitted infections including syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and herpes, as appropriate.
  • First-line testing for HIV is the fourth-generation test that detects HIV antibodies and p24 antigens; these can often identify infection within 2 weeks of exposure.
