  • Adrenal insufficiency is a condition that arises when the adrenal cortex cannot supply enough cortisol to meet physiological demands.
  • There are 3 categories of adrenal insufficiency: primary (PAI), secondary (SAI), and tertiary (TAI). An illustration of the 3 etiologies can be seen in Figure 1.
  • Table 1 summarizes common causes for the 3 types of adrenal insufficiency.2,8,13
