Acute Appendicitis

  • Laboratory testing alone is insufficient to rule in or rule out appendicitis;27-29 however, combining results of testing improves prediction.
  • There are multiple risk stratification scoring systems for appendicitis that can help increase the pretest probability of acute appendicitis and avoid unnecessary imaging.21,26,31-33
  • Based on the current literature, the Appendicitis Inflammatory Response (AIR) score (See Table 3) and the Adult Appendicitis Score are superior to the Alvarado score.30
