11 Modules Covering Common Presentations in Pediatric Urgent Care

The Pediatric Urgent Care Playbook addresses common and high-risk reasons for urgent care visits in pediatric patients, with diagnoses spanning the spectrum from benign to life threatening, urgent to emergent, and routine to can’t miss.

This practical, relevant, evidence-based education will strengthen your clinical knowledge, guide medical decision making, build confidence, improve pediatric patient outcomes, and help reduce risk.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of pediatric anaphylaxis
  • Choose an appropriate therapeutic option through review of the pediatric dosing of epinephrine, and evidence-based guidance for the use of adjunctive medications such as cetirizine, diphenhydramine, steroids, and H2 blockers
  • Identify which patients can be safely observed and discharged from the urgent care setting, versus those that require escalation of care

You’ll learn how to:

  • Recognize key differences between children and adults with closed head injuries
  • Identify the unique anatomical and physiological considerations of pediatric patients with closed head injuries
  • Evaluate the risk stratification of pediatric patients presenting with closed head injuries including decisions related to imaging, transfer, discharge, and in-office observation

You’ll learn how to:

  • Utilize the findings during a historical and physical exam to accurately diagnose cases of acute otitis media (AOM) and otitis externa (OE)
  • Recognize the indications for immediate antibiotic treatment of pediatric ear infection versus the “watchful waiting” approach
  • Identify appropriate first-line antibiotics, alternatives for allergy and treatment failure, and proper dose/duration based on cutting-edge evidence and expert recommendations

You’ll learn how to:

  • Identify the key historical and physical examination aspects that guide the workup of pediatric patients with fever
  • Recognize when blood testing, urinalysis, and other screening measures are indicated for pediatric patients with fever
  • Prescribe the appropriate first-line antibiotics for urinary tract infections in pediatric patients using evidence-based recommendations

You’ll learn how to:

  • Identify the key historical and physical examination findings that differentiate common pediatric respiratory infections in the urgent care setting
  • Assess patient presentations to distinguish between uncomplicated respiratory infections and potentially dangerous conditions requiring escalation of care
  • Apply evidence-based protocols for the medical treatment of pediatric respiratory infections

You’ll learn how to:

  • Identify key historical and physical examination findings that differentiate early pediatric sepsis from common viral illnesses in urgent care patients
  • Determine which febrile pediatric patients require routine management versus immediate intervention and transfer based on sepsis assessment criteria
  • Apply a pediatric sepsis pathway to achieve timely identification, initial stabilization, and appropriate transfer of septic patients

You’ll learn how to:

  • Identify clinical features that differentiate cellulitis, impetigo, paronychia, and abscess from other pediatric skin conditions
  • Determine when to suspect MRSA and other resistant pathogens requiring alternative antibiotic therapy
  • Recognize indications for incision and drainage procedures in pediatric SSTI management
  • Select appropriate antibiotic therapy based on patient factors, allergies, and current evidence

You’ll learn how to:

  • Utilize the findings during a historical and physical exam to guide the diagnosis of viral versus bacterial pharyngitis, and impact the decision to test for Group A Streptococcal infection
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of potentially dangerous pediatric throat infections that require escalation of care
  • Identify appropriate first-line antibiotics, alternatives for allergy and treatment failure/strep “carriers,” and proper dose/duration based on cutting-edge evidence and expert recommendations

You’ll learn how to:

  • Describe the clinical features that help differentiate serious from self limiting illnesses in children with vomiting and diarrhea
  • Evaluate dehydrated pediatric patients and determine the appropriate level of intervention

You’ll learn how to:

  • Identify and describe the key epidemiological factors, clinical presentations, and differential diagnoses associated with pediatric wheezing
  • Apply respiratory scoring systems to assess bronchiolitis and asthma severity
  • Select appropriate first-line treatment and disposition for pediatric patients presenting to urgent care with wheezing
