  • Stay apprised of current state-specific laws for definitions of consent and mandated reporting as it pertains to abuse.
  • In cases in which there is concern for multisystem trauma, hemodynamic instability, unstable vital signs, or ongoing blood loss, medical care and stabilization should take priority over forensic evaluation.
  • Once the patient is stabilized and abuse/assault is suspected, it is important for all clinicians to use gloves when touching the patient’s person or belongings. Ideally, any belongings that the patient removes should be placed on a paper sheet or in a paper bag.
