  • Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an antifibrinolytic medication that stabilizes blood clots by inhibiting plasmin and plasminogen-mediated fibrin degradation.17
  • TXA is commercially available as a tablet and an IV solution. These formulations can be readily modified in the ED to fit a variety of clinical needs. (See Table 1.)
  • TXA is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in dental extractions for patients with hemophilia and for heavy menstrual bleeding.3,4 However, TXA has been studied in a variety of other situations, particularly in acute hemorrhage.
  • TXA has been studied in a wide range of patient ages, including infants.
