Points & Pearls Excerpt

  • Skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs) are a spectrum of infections, including impetigo, ecthyma, cellulitis, erysipelas, folliculitis, furuncles, carbuncles, abscesses, and necrotizing infections.
  • An understanding of the features that can help distinguish SSTIs from other conditions is crucial to make the correct diagnosis. (See Table 1.)
  • When taking the history, it is important to evaluate for risk factors for SSTIs such as minor injuries (eg, a scratch), major injuries, or skin conditions such as eczema.
  • Signs of systemic involvement such as fever and hemodynamic instability (eg, tachycardia and hypotension) can indicate more severe infection and sepsis.
