Decompensated Hypothyroidism

  • Decompensated hypothyroidism (formerly known as myxedema coma), occurs most often in patients with hypothyroidism who experience a triggering event, such as levothyroxine discontinuation,6 sepsis, use of certain medications, infection, trauma, stroke, heart failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, or recent surgery.22
  • Female patients aged 60-85 years are most commonly affected, and presentation during the winter season is most likely.7
