James Haering, DO, SFHM

James Haering, DO, SFHM is a practicing hospitalist for Sound Physicians of Tacoma, WA with more than 20 years of clinical practice. He is Vice-President of Appeals and Physician Services for Resonant, a national utilization review advisory service. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and College of Osteopathic Medicine. He most recently served as Medical Director of Clinical Documentation, Physician Advisor for Utilization Review and Medical Director of Hospitalist Services at a multihospital health system in the Midwest.

Dr. Haering currently is involved with several transitions of care projects with Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and the Society of Hospital Medicine. Currently, he serves on the SHM Post-Acute Care Taskforce. He is active in providing education on documentation improvement and transitions of care to physicians, nonphysician providers, and clinical support staff. He has several years of experience working with organizations on third-party audits (eg, Recovery Audit Contractor). His leadership experience at multiple levels within the health system combined with continued active clinical practice provides an acute understanding of the financial impact on hospitals of physician practice patterns.
