Amir K. Jaffer, MD, MBA, SFHM
Amir K. Jaffer, MD, MBA, SFHM is Professor of Medicine and Associate Chief Medical Officer and the Vice Chair, Quality and Patient Safety in the Department of Medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. As the Division Chief of the newly formed Division of Hospital Medicine at Rush, Dr. Jaffer has led several initiatives in improving case management, reducing length of stay, and improving patient satisfaction. As the Vice Chair for Quality and Patient Safety, he established a robust infrastructure for patient safety and quality improvement in the Department of Internal Medicine. He is passionate about improving care and systems in the hospital.
Dr. Jaffer received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1994. His postgraduate training includes an internship and residency in internal medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and practices both Hospital and Perioperative Medicine. He also completed a MBA in Healthcare Management and Policy at the University Of Miami School Of Business. He has been selected as one of the Best Doctors in America each year over the last seven years by Best Doctors.
Prior to moving to Chicago, Dr. Jaffer was at the University of Miami for five years, where he built an academic division of outstanding clinicians and clinician educators that helped transform the new University of Miami Hospital (UMH). He also served for nearly three years as the founding Service Chief for Medicine after acquisition of UMH. In this role, he helped integrate the private physicians and University of Miami faculty, providing leadership to privileging, quality of care, peer review, and efficiency of the medical services. He was instrumental in integrating Internal Medicine housestaff at UMH.
Before moving to Miami, Dr. Jaffer was at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio for 10 years, where he was a leader in hospital medicine and developed an innovative center staffed by hospitalists to provide preoperative medical evaluations for patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. The center cut same-day cancellations by over 50%, leading to millions of dollars in saving and significantly improved patient satisfaction. He is nationally and internationally recognized for his work in Hospital Medicine, Perioperative Medicine, and Anticoagulation.
Dr. Jaffer has won several awards for teaching, including the Scholarship in Teaching Award in 2006 and again in 2007 by the Case Western Reserve Medical School in recognition of his efforts as an educator in Perioperative Medicine. In 2010, he was honored with the Society of Hospital Medicine’s highest award, the Award for Excellence in Teaching for his enormous dedication to the education and mentorship of students, residents and fellows in hospital medicine. Dr. Jaffer has become a transformative figure in moving hospital medicine to a true academic discipline. He is currently the Associate Editor of the book Hospital Medicine Secrets and Editor-in-Chief of a textbook called Perioperative Medicine: Medical Consultation and Co-management. He has also served as one of the authors of much-cited 8th and 9th American College of Chest Physicians Evidence-based Guidelines in Antithrombotic Therapy. He has published extensively and speaks nationally within his areas of interest and expertise.
