The Laceration Course

Included in this course:

  • Module 1: Background & Basics: We kick off the course by presenting foundational knowledge to evaluate any wound you encounter in practice. Highlights: the 4 phases of healing; host and wound factors; and the importance of the inital evaluation in assessing and managing lacerations.
  • Module 2: Preparing for Repair: This module sets the scene for a typical presentation and procedure, walking you through wound evaluation, anesthesia options, and wound irrigation.
  • Module 3: Supplies & Setup: Get to know the tools, instruments, and supplies you’ll rely on for laceration repair. This module covers what to stock, how to store it, and why it’s so important to streamline operations and plan for contingencies.
  • Module 4: Essential Repair Skills: This module presents the core skills of laceration repair. Learn the principles of wound closure and then apply them to repair techniques using sutures, staples, tissue adhesive strips and glues, and novel closure devices. Watch (and rewatch) step-by-step animations and demos for every stitch and technique covered, from simple running to subcuticular.
  • Module 5: Repairing Fingers: This module focuses on how to evaluate and repair most types of finger injuries – and which finger presentations to have on your radar for immediate referral.
  • Module 6: Repairing Faces: Learn all about facial nerve blocks, the best approach for eyelid and eyebrow lacerations, how to avoid a misaligned vermilion border, the special considerations for intraoral wounds, and more.
  • Module 7: High-Risk Wounds: Some wounds are associated with higher morbidity and potential for bad outcomes. This module covers mammalian bites, puncture wounds, skin tears, waterborne exposures, road rash, and tetanus prophylaxis.
  • Module 8: Repair Aftercare: The repair is complete; what comes next? This module reviews antibiotic prophylaxis, at-home care, red flags to watch for, discharge instructions, and suture removal guidelines.
  • Module 9: Mitigating Risk: Medicolegal expert Dr. William Sullivan joins me to address the 3 biggest risks for complications and malpractice claims in laceration management.
  • Module 10: Safeguarding Charting: Dr. Sullivan returns solo to cover the documentation dos and don’ts that will support and defend your sound medical decision-making related to laceration management.
  • Module 11: Rightsizing Reimbursement: Your education on laceration management would not be complete without a footnote on coding for the relatively common procedures and repairs covered so far.
  • Module 12: Case Presentations: The Laceration Course concludes with six case presentations that bring together the principles and techniques presented in all of the previous modules.
The Laceration Course - This was a very informative course and thoroughly prepared. I feel much more confident about suturing as a new NP because of this course. Thank you so much!
