The Pediatric Patient

Due to anatomic factors, children are at higher risk of sustaining blunt renal injury than adults.89 In one study, while renal trauma accounted for only 3.5% of pediatric GU injuries, 25.7% of trauma admissions were due to renal trauma.105 History and physical examination are less reliable in this patient population, as children can have significant renal trauma without gross hematuria or hypotension.106
