Rapid diagnosis followed promptly by initiation of appropriate therapy is the best way to reduce both costs and length of stay. Heart failure is largely a clinical diagnosis. Adjunctive tests are mainly helpful in patients whose diagnosis is unclear and to look for any underlying cause of the patient’s decompensation. BNP testing can help pinpoint the diagnosis in patients with an unclear etiology of their dyspnea, thereby reducing the length of hospitalization and costs.109
