  • Simple VOC with no complicating features with typical character, quality, and site of pain can be managed without laboratory tests. A CBC, reticulocyte count, and comprehensive metabolic panel testing in simple VOC presentations add no value to decision-making.53,136-138 However, laboratory testing should be obtained if an intravenous catheter is being placed for severe pain requiring intravenous analgesia; when there is an alternate diagnosis being considered; or when the patient is systemically unwell, has worsening pallor, is jaundiced, or is being admitted.37
