Patients With Sickle Cell Trait

Individuals with sickle cell trait were historically viewed as having a benign carrier state. There is increasing data that individuals with sickle cell trait suffer disease processes distinct from SCD.

Exertional Collapse Associated With Sickle Cell Trait

Exertional collapse associated with sickle cell trait (ECAST) is a potentially fatal condition that is primarily associated with athletes and military recruits. Kark et al first described this phenomenon in 1987. In a cohort of 2 million United States Army recruits, he found an approximately 28-fold increased risk of exercise-related deaths among personnel with sickle cell trait compared to those with no sickle cell trait.102 There are now numerous case reports in children, adolescents, and young adults that describe this serious complication during intense exercise.
