 A complete metabolic panel and serum osmolality may be helpful in evaluating for the presence of an anion gap or osmolal gap in an ill-appearing patient with suspected ingestion.19 The anion gap is estimated by subtracting chloride and bicarbonate levels from the sodium level. Etiologies of an increased gap are represented by the mnemonic MUDPILES. (See Table 4.)
