Patients who meet low-risk criteria for spinal injury can be safely discharged home without precautions or scheduled follow-up. The presence of a spinal fracture or any neurologic deficit requires consultation with a surgical spine service. The majority of these patients will require admission, although some stable fractures may be managed on an outpatient basis.
