The guidelines for delirium are consistent in the recommendation that diagnostic studies indicated in the workup of delirium are directed by the history, physical examination, and differential diagnosis. These recommendations are based on expert consensus. Clinical training, judgment, and common sense are the common themes in the literature discussing the workup of delirium. More specific to delirium, a search for both precipitating factors and vulnerability factors should be undertaken.19,42
