Hospitalists are faced with a persistent challenge in managing adult SCD patients in the inpatient setting. At the time of initial assessment, HbSS should be differentiated from SCT and HbSC disease because of the differences in each SCD variant's clinical manifestations. Early treatment and frequent reassessment is key for effective management of an acute pain crisis, and adequate pain treatment should not be withheld based on fear of addiction.
