Differential Diagnosis

It is important to differentiate homozygous SCD (HbSS or sickle cell anemia) and heterozygous hemoglobin sickle cell (HbSC) disease from sickle cell trait (SCT) because of differences in clinical manifestations. If the specific hemoglobinopathy condition is not known in a patient admitted to the hospital, it should be clarified by either obtaining past hemoglobin electrophoresis records or performing the test during the hospital admission. Table 1 includes a comparison between HbSS, HbSC disease, and HbAS.
