<< Pediatric Blunt Abdominal Trauma In The Emergency Department: Evidence-Based Management Techniques (Trauma CME)

Emergency Department Evaluation

Evaluation of the child with blunt abdominal trauma begins with the primary survey.14 Priorities include maintaining or supporting the airway, breathing, and circulation while rapidly identifying and treating any life-threatening or limb-threatening injuries and preventing neurological compromise. The patient must be fully undressed in order to evaluate for possible injuries while also making an effort to avoid hypothermia.14 In the setting of multisystem trauma, history, physical examination, diagnostic studies, and treatment all typically occur simultaneously. The focused assessment sonography in trauma (FAST) is a tool utilized during the primary survey and will be discussed later on.14
