Upon arrival to the ED, evaluation of a motor vehicle trauma patient should be done in a systematic fashion, in accordance with the ATLS® guidelines. The ATLS® guidelines can be divided into 2 primary sections: (1) the primary survey, and (2) the secondary survey; both are discussed in detail as part of the ATLS® course.87 The primary survey can be summarized with the mnemonic ABCDE: Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability (neurologic status), and Exposure.
