Approximately 60% to 70% of burns seen in EDs affect < 10% TBSA119 and are suitable for outpatient management after minor debridement and topical wound management, provided the patient can tolerate oral intake and outpatient follow-up is assured. Patients with moderate burns may be admitted to a nonspecialty center hospital bed for hydration, pain control, and observation.
