Patients with moderate or severe burns may require definitive airway management, particularly if inhalation injury (a leading cause of death in burned adults85,86) is present. However, even when inhalation injury is absent, massive fluid resuscitation can lead to airway edema, mandating measures to secure the airway. Unfortunately, no clinical factors reliably predict which patients will proceed to near or complete obstruction.87
