Calculating BMI is done by dividing the patient’s weight, in kilograms, by the height, in meters squared (kg/m2). The BMI is recognized as the most reliable method to determine weight status and adiposity, but it can overestimate adiposity in athletes or muscular children. Keeping this in mind, BMI—in combination with clinical assessment—is sufficient to make the diagnosis of overweight.
