Meningitis: Evidence To Guide An Evolving Standard Of Care

April 2005

Abstract

TIMELY identification and management of bacterial meningitis are the keys to optimizing the chances of a favorable clinical outcome. If the diagnosis is missed or poorly managed, bacterial meningitis can lead to serious sequelae, including neurological damage and death. In this issue of Pediatric Emergency Medicine PRACTICE, we will eview the literature regarding the ED care of meningitis in children, with a focus on bacterial meningitis. Given the seriousness of the potential outcomes, it is clear that all emergency physicians need to be intimately familiar with this clinical condition.
