About this Review

This article is a clinical practice review of the medical management of the physical abuse of children. It begins with a discussion of the challenges surrounding this type of assessment, which is often interdisciplinary and involves members of both the medical and legal communities. An approach to the complete evaluation of a child, including a table with step-by-step guidelines, is outlined. The findings for abusive head trauma (AHT), abdominal trauma, cutaneous and intraoral findings, and fractures are emphasized. The article concludes with a discussion of some of the uncertainties involving assessment of physical abuse of children, including the identification of AHT and the timing of injuries, and efforts for prevention.
