Diverticulitis is an inflammatory process of the colon that typically presents with left lower quadrant pain, fever, and leukocytosis. The incidence of diverticulitis is increasing due to increasing rates of obesity and comorbid conditions in the general population. This article outlines the diagnosis and evaluation of diverticulitis and discusses common complications that necessitate inpatient admission. The article also reviews appropriate outpatient management and risk for recurrence.
