Distinguishing a bacterial versus viral etiology is one way that biomarkers can potentially change the therapeutic management of meningitis. The margin for error, though, is very low, since inappropriate management of bacterial meningitis can have devastating neurologic effects. For this reason, it is important to have a very high sensitivity and negative predictive value (NPV), limiting the number of false-negative results.
