August 2008

Abstract

Are your assessment and management of pediatric knee, ankle, and wrist injuries evidence-based? In the heat of a busy August trauma season kids present to the ED following motor vehicle crashes, falls, sports injuries, and any number of mechanisms. The EM physician must be able to recognize and manage unique injury patterns seen throughout childhood and adolescence as the physis matures. This requires understanding the mechanisms of injury and how the growing skeleton transmits forces. Do you know which physical examination tests are backed by evidence and how to determine if an injury even requires imaging studies? Specific management may depend upon the injury, but it is important to realize how ED management and discharge instructions affect long-term outcomes for these patients. This article consists of 3 sections which will take an in-depth look at the evidence behind each injury. This article will hopefully provide you with all the tools necessary to manage these acute injuries in your ED!
