Topic #1: An Evidence-Based Approach To The Evaluation And Treatment Of Croup In Children

There is little that is more concerning as an emergency medicine practitioner than the threat of impending airway loss. The pediatric airway prompts a special concern because, for most practitioners, the opportunity to intubate a child is a rarity. When managed correctly, however, croup is a disease process in which the need to intubate a crashing patient can be avoided.

With the advent of steroids and racemic epinephrine, this disease process is now reversible. This audio session will refresh your acumen for the diagnosis and treatment of croup and introduce you to some new concepts, so you can avoid potential airway disasters.

Length: 19 minutes

Topic #2: An Evidence-Based Approach To Pediatric Procedural Sedation

Having to do an unplanned intubation because of an iatrogenic event is something every emergency medicine practitioner seeks to avoid. Which is what makes pediatric procedural sedation such an important topic. There are few things you do in emergency medicine that threaten the airway more than deeply sedating your patients.

The painful procedures you're called to perform force you to walk the line between deep sedation and general anesthesia in order to achieve adequate analgesia. But where do you draw the line? This audio review will expand your familiarity with multiple sedation medications that span the really new drugs to the more traditional accepted therapies. You'll learn what medication choices are available and which techniques will increase your sedation safety profile.

Length: 23 minutes

Topic #3: An Evidence-Based Review Of Acute Appendicitis In Childhood

Missed appendicitis is one of the most successfully litigated cases in the pediatric population, making this a review you simply can't miss. We'll go over the pitfalls to avoid and address key questions like:

  • Should the age-old practice of taking a history, performing a physical, having a surgeon examine the abdomen, and finally taking the patient to the operating suite to have their appendix removed give way to other diagnostic strategies?
  • Are newer algorithms and scoring systems that attempt to increase specificity really necessary, and are they sensitive enough?
  • Does this disease warrant the risks associated with the radiation from the CT scanner or the time delays from ultrasound?
  • More importantly, how accurate are all of these strategies?

Length: 22 minutes

Topic #4: Diagnosing And Managing Ovarian And Adnexal Torsion In Children

Narrowing the differential diagnosis to a short list that includes ovarian torsion may be automatic in cases when the patient presents with colicky pain and appears to be severely toxic, but what about in children who are unable to provide you with a history?  And what about those who present with a more nondescript form of abdominal pain? The weight of the medical literature makes it clear that ultrasound alone is not good enough to be able to rule out this disease process.

This audio review will give you an evidence-based approach to this topic, so you'll know how to combine all tools available to you (history, physical examination, and ancillary testing) to correctly identify this disease.

Length: 17 minutes
